Rest of World is an international journalism publication focused on exploring the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble. Our goal is to surface and showcase the often surprising and unintended effects of tech in places that get little attention from mainstream news outlets.
Since launching last year, Rest of World has published over 150 stories from (and on) more than 50 countries. Through compelling storytelling and fresh, innovative design, our stories explore the spaces where tech, culture, and human experience collide. We are a mission-driven nonprofit startup that aims to push forward our understanding of technology’s role in rapidly changing cultures.
We are looking for three enthusiastic, organized, and detail-obsessed editorial interns to join our team this spring. The ideal candidate will be someone with a deep curiosity about the world, who is tenacious and thorough in their approach to reporting and storytelling and thrives in a highly collaborative startup environment.
Interns will be responsible for helping fact-check our features and articles, while providing research support to our editors based in New York and around the world. We are specifically looking for foreign-language speakers with proficiency in Korean, Arabic, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin (and able to read simplified Chinese), Tamil, Hindi, and/or Urdu. You aren’t expected to arrive with any fact-checking experience or digital media experience but should have fine research chops and a ready-to-learn attitude and be adaptable to the challenges and tasks thrown your way.
This role can be based anywhere (foreign students are welcome to apply), but you will be asked to be available at some hours that coincide with the editorial team in New York.
Successful candidates will be paid $20/hour. This is a part-time role, and interns will be expected to work no more than 30 hours per week.
The internship will begin on May 1 and end on July 30.
- At least one prior internship at a news organization or a journalism startup — preferably covering tech, business, or international reporting — or experience in student journalism programs
- Proficiency in at least one of the languages listed above, plus English
- Strong research skills, especially across different regions, cultures, and languages
- A strong work ethic, comfort with startup conditions, a motivated self-starter
- A bachelor’s degree and/or a professional journalism degree or higher
To apply, please send a one-page resume and a cover letter explaining why you want to work for Rest of World to firstname.lastname@example.org with “Fact-checking Internship” in the subject line.
The last day to submit your application is March 26, 2021.
Qualified participants will be invited to complete a short edit test.
