Rest of World is an international journalism publication dedicated to surfacing and showcasing the surprising and unintended effects of tech in places that get little attention from mainstream Western news outlets. Since launching last year, we have published stories from over 75 countries, anchored by our editors and reporters in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America and Africa.
We are looking for two fact-checking interns to join our team in the new year. As a fact-checking intern, you’ll fact-check several stories per week, including, occasionally, longform features. You’ll work closely with the editorial team on a day-to-day basis, which includes fielding research requests and participating in the publication’s weekly pitch meeting. A keen intern will likely be able to take on limited writing assignments aligned to their interests, and a goal of the program is to have interns publish at least one article during the program’s duration. You’ll learn how to use various research tools, including LexisNexis and Pacer, while also mastering the internet’s best search practices. Rest of World’s head of fact-checking will manage the internship program, which involves daily check-ins on assignments.
Interns will be paid $20/hour. This is a part-time role, and interns will be expected to work no more than 20 hours per week.
The internship will begin on January 3, 2022 and end on June 30, 2022.
- We are a small team working for a site that publishes roughly a dozen stories per week, so a commitment to deadlines is a must, as is the ability to communicate with editors
- Fluency in at least one language (other than English) is a must, especially Bahasa Indonesia, Spanish, Filipino, Mandarin, Korean, and Portuguese
- A curiosity to go beyond a Google search, and a willingness to pick up a phone, call sources, and ask questions
- An openness to collaboration within the fact-checking department, as what we do thrives when it isn’t siloed and is rather a collaborative process
To apply, please send a one-page resume and a cover letter explaining why you want this internship to Matt Giles at email@example.com, with “Fact-Checking Internship” in the subject line.
The last day to submit your application is December 13, 2021.
