Managing Editor

Rest of World is a new international journalism newsroom, launching in spring 2020, that’s focused on exploring the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble. Our goal is to surface and showcase the often surprising and unintended effects of tech in places that get little attention from mainstream news outlets.

Through compelling storytelling and fresh, innovative design, our digital publication will explore the spaces where tech, culture and human experience collide. We are a mission-driven nonprofit startup that aims to push forward our understanding of technology’s role in rapidly changing cultures.

Rest of World Media is looking for an enthusiastic, organized and story-obsessed managing editor to run the operations behind Rest of World. The ideal candidate will play a key role, together with the executive editor, in planning future stories, managing field editors and editing longer and shorter features.

The successful candidate will be a curious thinker about the world, and tenacious and thorough in their approach to uncovering a good tech story or finding a telling detail in an existing story that can be probed further. They must have strong management experience, an ability to work well as part of a team while thriving in a highly collaborative startup environment. Strong candidates will have at least seven-plus years of editing experience and a proven ability to manage a team of reporters and/or editors. Having a deep rolodex of solid freelance reporters is a strong plus.

The position reports directly to Rest of World’s executive editor and will be based out of New York.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive and develop story ideas for assignment
  • Manage freelance and staff writers and outside any external editing network
  • Constantly looking to recruit suitable writers to report out tech across the non-Western world
  • Assist in the story development process with regional editors
  • Monitor international publications with an eye to developing strong stories for Rest of World
  • Run weekly story pitch meetings and maintain editorial planning

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of editing experience, with some managing experience
  • Proven experience running a team of international news, business or tech reporters
  • Established relationships with writers, particularly international journalists
  • A serious love of, and experience in, narrative story execution
  • A strong BS detector and an aversion to cultural cliches
  • A champion for original writing and writers’ unique voices
  • Curiosity about international stories and/or the use of technology abroad is a plus
  • A strong work ethic, comfort with startup conditions, a motivated self-starter
  • Collaborative, enjoys working in teams with different disciplines and learning from others

To apply, please send a resume and a cover letter to jobs@restofworld.org with “Managing Editor” in the subject line. In your cover letter, please share three stories you’ve edited, describe your role in shaping them and tell us what you’d do differently this time.
