We are thrilled to announce that Caiwei Chen, who has been covering stories on Chinese technology, society, and culture, will join Rest of World as China reporter. Caiwei will add to our stellar roster of reporters, and to the talented team covering the influence of Chinese tech inside the country and out in the world, helping Rest of World publish a mix of in-depth, fascinating, and the most consequential stories about technology in and from China.

Caiwei’s reporting on the rapidly changing Chinese internet has appeared in Wired, Protocol, South China Morning Post, SupChina, and Radii, among others. She has regularly contributed to Chaoyang Trap, a critically acclaimed Substack newsletter that focuses on everyday lives on China’s internet. She has also hosted a Mandarin-language podcast that explores how different cultures mutate online.

Caiwei was born in Xiangyang, China, and speaks fluent Mandarin. Like all good reporters, she has hobbies, which include, but are not limited to, internet sleuthing, cooking, and crocheting. She graduated from University of Colorado-Denver and China Agricultural University in Beijing — before going on to Columbia University for an M.A. in Oral History. She will be based in New York, and report to our China editor in Asia. She starts on May 16.

Please join us in welcoming Caiwei to Rest of World!
