As Indonesia’s middle class swelled, so did their disposable income, and brokerage app Ajaib was there to offer consumers new ways to invest. A rough equivalent of U.S.-based trading app Robinhood, SoftBank-backed Ajaib requires no minimum outlay and is designed to appeal to first-time traders. Anderson Sumarli, a Stanford Graduate School of Business graduate, started the stocks and mutual funds trading platform in 2019, saying he wanted to democratize access to information on personal finance and investment. Its interface is geared toward millennial and Gen-Z users, who form the majority of their approximately 1 million-strong user base. It will be an early test for the viability of app-based trading in Southeast Asia
