The co-founder of the world’s largest neobank, Nubank, Cristina Junqueira is one of Latin America’s most successful female fintech leaders. In 2013, she quit her job at Brazilian banking giant Itaú — where she’d worked for five years — armed with a deep understanding of the country’s banking system and an idea of what she wanted to do differently. Hoping her expertise, both cultural and industry-based, would help him tap into the Brazilian market, Colombian Nubank CEO David Vélez recruited Junqueira as his co-founder that same year. Almost a decade later, Junqueira’s Nubank would find itself vying with Itaú for the title of Latin America’s most valuable listed bank.
