Almost six years ago, Sergio Fogel founded dLocal, a cross-border payment platform for Latin America and other emerging markets that became Uruguay’s first unicorn. It did this in September 2020, beating a huge, powerful market like Mexico to produce its first unicorn. When stocks surged after dLocal’s IPO in June 2021, the self-proclaimed high-tech entrepreneur enjoyed a brief stint as a billionaire. But Fogel isn’t resting on his dLocal laurels and has co-founded another fintech out of Montevideo called Datanomik, an open banking platform to connect financial institutions across Latin America.
